Private Instruction
J/World provides private instruction to all levels aboard sailing and power vessels. If you either prefer a more intimate setting, or if you have a boating background and/or goals which do not fit perfectly with our standard course offerings, a customized experience can be the best option. Training can be provided for individuals, or for your private party of any size.
Private instruction also allows us to accommodate even the most difficult of schedules, and we will build the training around your availability.
Training can be conducted aboard our fleet of quality vessels, and we have access to a wide range of additional vessels to insure that we have the appropriate platform for your desired objectives.
Private instruction is offered at rates that compare favorably to our standard offerings, so contact us to discuss your needs and goals.
Programs for Boat Owners
Having one of our experienced professionals aboard your vessel can be a benefit in many ways.
It’s easy to get someone to come do things for you. Our goal is to teach you how to do it yourself! We will give you the knowledge to be truly self-sufficient. We will assist you in mastering the skills necessary for the ongoing safe and efficient operation and maintenance of your vessel.
Confidence through Competence
Not sure about the rules of the road (what do those diamonds and balls mean again?). Maybe you haven’t exercised the Navigation muscle for a while. Or maybe the sails look great, but you aren’t sure where along the track to put that jib lead, or how much backstay to put on. Do the shrouds seem loose? Do you think that the mainsheet is difficult to manage and that there must be a better way to rig it? There probably is! You spent a lot of money on your boat and sails. Isn’t it worth the tiniest fraction of that to learn how to use it all correctly and efficiently?
Systems Overview and Operation
Learn about electrical systems, fresh water and plumbing, refrigeration, etc. Know how to properly use the systems on your boat to get the most out of them while learning to avoid costly mistakes.
Rig Tuning & Standing Rigging
Shroud tension, headstay sag, backstay tension, etc. Your rig is a dynamic, living thing. Learn how to make intelligent adjustments to adjust for wind and water conditions. This isn’t just about performance, it is about making sure your boat is efficient, manageable, and safe.and seaworthy.
Running Rigging Setup and Use
Outhaul, vang, cunningham, halyards, reefing systems, etc. Do you really know what they all do? What is the best way to manage your boat with it’s current rigging setup? Maybe there are some free and/or inexpensive changes you can make to your rigging or your procedure to make life easier and safer.
Sail Inventory Assessment and Sail Trim Overview
What are the characteristics of each sail? What wind ranges are they appropriate for? How should you be trimming each sail to get the most out of it? Learn to increase the effectiveness and lifespan of your expensive sail inventory.
Safety Procedures and Equipment
Which crew-overboard procedures are best suited for your vessel? What safety equipment is recommended for your sailing? What gear provides the best value for your needs?
Engine Overview & Maintenance
Standard maintenance procedures. What are the primary malfunctions of diesel power plant? What are the warning signs of engine malfunction?
Yacht Design Overview
What are the characteristics of your vessel? In what areas can you expect your boat to excel? Where are the weak spots? How to you leverage weaknesses into strengths?
Boat Handling Under Power
Learn special procedures which apply to your power or sailing vessel, such as spring-line docking and departure, the back & fill, twin and single screw maneuvering, etc.
Boat Handling Under Sail
Understand the dynamics at work between the sails and the underwater foils. Tacking, gybing, docking, and so on. Feel comfortable and in control of the vessel.
Heavy Weather Concerns and Procedures
Should you reef or reduce headsail area? If you should reef, when should you do it? How is it most efficiently and safely performed? If reefing isn’t enough, what then?
Vessel Management
How to look after your investment, and how to get the most pleasure and the least problems from sailing.
The cost for these services is surprisingly low, but the benefits can be tremendous. A simple overview of jib lead position or headstay tension, for example, can increase your sailing efficiency far more than new sails or a bottom job can, and with far less effort and expense. Our consulting services will make certain you spend money on equipment, rigging, sails, and maintenance which you really need: we are an entirely unbiased third-party which receives no compensation for selling you gear or services. We have only your interests in mind.
Give us a call. You will talk to a sailor who is focused on helping you get the most from your boat, whether you are interested in day sailing, coastal cruising, offshore passage making, or racing.
Race and Team Coaching
We have been coaching racers for about as long as modern one design racing has been in existence. We got our start as a finishing school for high level J/24 competitors in 1981. In the past three decades, we have built an extensive network of some of the best coaches within the sport of sailing. Wholly owned subsidiary J World Performance Sailing is supplemented by the comprehensive offerings of parent company Blue Element Yachting to provide a full suite of services to racers.
Our staff works with your team to outline your goals and help you attain them. Whether you want to hire professional sailors to get you around the course faster, or whether you want to bring in our top tier coaches to teach you to go it alone, we will structure a program that will deliver.
True Coaches
It’s easy to find good sailors. It’s much more difficult to find good sailors who have the ability to communicate well and share their knowledge with others in ways that are conducive to understanding and learning that information. We are continually on the lookout for individuals who have this ability, and then we work with them to advance their coaching skills.
Our staff are not aboard to just help you win that one race. We aren’t there to tune the boat for that one day, or to trim the sails perfectly for the one regatta. We are there to teach YOU and your team how to do it. This is a tremendously different approach than hiring a pro-tactician, or than having your sailmaker aboard.
We can join you for as little as a half day, of for a full season. Call us to discuss options. For a fraction of the cost of the new jib, you can find much more improvement!
Our Boats or Yours
Our coaches will come to you (we serve all of North America and beyond…) and can arrange sessions with you and/or your full team aboard your boat, OR you can come to us and sail aboard one of our fleet boats. Chances are, we have access to something largely similar to what you are racing.
Team Development and Training
J/World works with owners to assist in finding crew, and with full teams to advance skills and refine onboard workflow and communication. Interestingly, at the higher levels of coaching, we find that our job becomes less about how much backstay to carry and where to put the jib lead (most of the team has already figured that out) and more about communication team-building. The Team is an all too often neglected piece of onboard ‘equipment,’ and you might be very surprised on how much your performance can be improved by remembering some key factors.
Tuning and Optimization Instruction and Assistance
Modern rigs are dynamic pieces of equipment. Sail technology has developed materials and shapes which are highly controllable. The net result is that we have a tremendous ability to manipulate the shapes of our airfoils like never before. In fact, the equipment at our fingertips as sailors these days has outrun the understanding that most sailors have of the usage! This is where we come in. We’ll teach you what to look for in terms of tuning and sail shape, and then the process of how to get there.
If tuning has been an enigma to you, let us know. A rigger can dial your static tuning in at the dock, but you need a coach aboard to run thru the full tuning process for shifting gears on the water. Those boats at the front of the fleet? In most classes, they are changing rig setting every race.
Support Staff
We have a full time office staff in California and maintain three physical offices in North America. When you have questions, we are highly available and quick to respond.
